We are about a week into Leo season now, and you have probably already seen the posts. Shine your light, take up space, it is your time, queen. There is nothing exactly wrong with any of that, except that it tends to breeze right past the more interesting question hiding underneath, which is the one Leo season actually came to ask. What we should focus on is what part of you is actually trying to shine and what is hoping to get back.
Because there are two very different reasons a person steps into the light, and Leo season has a way of making it obvious which one you have been running on. I know the difference from the inside, having done both, sometimes in the same afternoon, so none of what follows is a lecture from higher ground. It is more like a note passed between two people who have caught themselves performing and would rather not. ( coming from an actual Leo, trust me, I've been there).
Every year around late July the Sun comes home. Leo is the one sign the Sun rules, its own house and for about a month it gets to be fully, unapologetically itself. So the whole mood of the season takes on that quality. Warmer, bolder, more playful, a little more theatrical and a lot of creativity in the air. The invitation, at its simplest, is to stop managing yourself down into something smaller than you actually are.
Leo rules the heart. Once there is the physical heart, but also the part of you that creates, that plays, that falls in love, that wants to make something and have it be seen. It rules the inner child, the one who used to draw for hours with no thought of whether it was any good. It rules courage, which is worth remembering, since the root of that word is the Latin for heart. Leo is the part of us that wants to leave something warm and radiant behind, and does not particularly want to be sensible about it.
The Sun has never once asked to be looked at. It simply burns, and gives its warmth away, and the looking takes care of itself. It does not perform sunrise. It does not check whether anyone noticed. That is the version of being seen that Leo, at its best, is pointing at, and it is worth holding in mind, because it is not the version most of us default to.
Most years, Leo season is the Sun doing its familiar thing in its own sign, and that is pretty much it. This year though things are a bit different. Jupiter came home to Leo on the thirtieth of June, for the first time since 2014. Jupiter is the planet of expansion and luck and more-of-everything and it will spend this whole season sitting beside the Sun in the sky's most radiant sign. In plain terms, whatever you lean into now tends to grow, confidence lands a little softer and generosity has a way of coming back multiplied. If you want a quiet gauge of what this transit does, think back to roughly 2014 and 2015 in your own life, and try to remember what expanded then. Seems like a lifetime ago, I know, but we can still look back and understand the bigger picture. So something is being offered to us again, to a version of you who has lived through everything since.
Then there is the peak, which is still ahead of us. On the 12 of August there will be a total solar eclipse, the first eclipse in this sign since 2019, with Mercury and Jupiter gathered there too. Eclipses are accelerators. They tend to close chapters faster than feels comfortable and open doors you did not know were there. So this season is less a gentle month of good vibes and more a genuine turning point, building toward a single bright, decisive moment in the middle of August.
All of which raises the stakes on the question underneath, because a season this amplified will expand whatever you actually bring to it, including the part of you that is only performing.
There are two hungers that look almost identical from the outside, and Leo season will separate them. One is the wish to be seen, to let what is actually true in you become visible, to make the thing and offer it. The other is the need to be seen, which is a quieter and more anxious animal, the one that performs, that checks the numbers, that feels a little unreal until someone reflects it back. They can wear the exact same outfit. You can post the same photo, make the same work, walk into the same room, from either one. The difference is entirely in what you are hoping happens next.
You already know which one you are in, if you are willing to look honestly at it. The wish to be seen feels like an overflow, something spilling out of you that would have come out anyway. The need to be seen feels like a reach, a small hollow that is hoping to be filled from the outside. And most of us, if we are honest, spend a lot of our lives in the second one without ever quite admitting it, because it is dressed so convincingly as ambition, or as sharing, or as simply putting ourselves out there.
This is the same territory as the spiritual ego, where the self quietly turns everything, even the good things, into a way to be someone. The need to be seen is that exact mechanism, running on visibility instead of spirituality. And underneath it, almost always, is something older and more tender. The need to be seen now is usually standing on a place where you were not seen when it actually mattered, some early stretch where being your full self did not get you the warmth you needed, so you learned to perform for it instead. That is not a character flaw. That is a child who found a strategy that worked, and never got told they could stop. Meeting that is shadow work, and it is far kinder than it sounds.
I want to be careful here, because it would be easy to read all of this as a reason to go hide, to decide that wanting to be seen at all is somehow spiritually suspect and retreat into a very proud kind of smallness. That is just the same hunger wearing humility, and it is not really the point.
The healthy version of Leo is not less visible. It is being visible differently. It makes the thing because making it is the joy, and lets being seen be a byproduct rather than the goal. It gives warmth without keeping a receipt. It can take up a whole room and somehow leave everyone in it feeling warmer rather than smaller, because it is not competing for the light, it is generating some. This is the difference between a person who walks in needing the room and a person who walks in bringing something to it, and you can feel which is which within about four seconds of either one arriving.
It also knows how to be delighted, which is an underrated Leo skill. The healthy heart mean more than trying to be witnessed, it is busy witnessing, genuinely lit up by other people's work and other people's shine, with none of the small tax of comparison. If your own success makes other people's success harder to celebrate, that is worth noticing this month. It usually means you are still operating from the reach rather than the overflow.
This season is not about becoming more visible, don't take it like that. You need to notice which engine your visibility is running on, and gently move toward the better one. There are a few plain ways to do that.
Make something you would make even if no one ever saw it. This is the fastest way to feel the difference in your own body. Notice whether the wish to share it arrives before you have even finished, and whether the joy survives the possibility that it lands in front of nobody. That tells you a great deal.
Let yourself be delighted on purpose. Pick something someone else made and love it out loud, with no part of you keeping score. Generosity of attention is a real Leo practice, and it quietly loosens the grip of the reach.
Catch one performance in the act. Just one. Some moment this week where you feel yourself adjusting, editing, angling to be perceived a certain way, and simply see it without a verdict. You do not have to stop. Seeing it is the work. The whole thing this season is really about is the gap between the self you perform and the self you actually are, which is the same ground as becoming a genuinely more honest version of yourself, and the work we built The Shift around, if you want a structured way into it.
And let yourself be seen in one true way. Say the real thing to one person, show the work that is not quite polished, let someone catch you as you actually are. This is what Leo is quietly daring you toward under all the noise about shining, and it is far braver than any amount of visibility.
Do not turn any of this into another stick to beat yourself with. If you have caught yourself performing while reading this, congratulations for being a person. The wanting to be seen is not the problem, and trying to purge yourself of it entirely is just the ego finding a more spiritual way to be the main character again. Everyone reaches for the mirror sometimes. The Sun itself is, let us be honest, the single most attention-commanding object in the sky, and it manages this without a shred of apology, so the answer was never to want less light.
The lighter posture, the one that actually works, is a kind of amused honesty with yourself. Of course some of what I do is a reach for reflection, and of course I cannot always tell which is which in the moment, so I will make my things and love other people's things and let the season expand whatever is real in me, and try to laugh when I catch myself checking who noticed. Leo, at its warmest, is the one so lit up from the inside that being looked at stops being the point.
If the gap between the performed self and the real one is what this season keeps putting in front of you, The Shift is a plain place to work with it, at whatever pace the summer allows.
When is Leo season 2026?
Leo season 2026 runs from July 22 to August 22, when the Sun moves through Leo before entering Virgo. The most intense stretch is the middle of August, around the total solar eclipse on the 12th.
What does Leo season mean?
Leo season is the month when the Sun returns to the sign it rules, turning the collective mood warmer, bolder, and more creative. It governs the heart, self-expression, play, courage, and visibility, and it invites you to stop shrinking yourself and let what is genuine in you be seen. At its deepest, it asks whether you can be visible without performing.
Why is Leo season 2026 special?
This is the biggest Leo season in over a decade, because Jupiter returned to Leo on June 30 for the first time since 2014, amplifying everything the season touches, and because a total solar eclipse lands in Leo on August 12, the first there since 2019. Together they make this less a routine month and more a genuine turning point around confidence, creativity, and identity.
When is the Leo eclipse in 2026?
The total solar eclipse in Leo falls on August 12, 2026, at roughly twenty degrees of Leo, with Mercury and Jupiter also in the sign. Eclipses tend to accelerate change, closing some chapters quickly and opening others, so it is worth moving through it with attention rather than force.
What should I do during Leo season?
Lean toward creating and expressing from genuine joy rather than for validation, let yourself be delighted by others without comparison, and notice where you perform instead of simply showing up. The most valuable practice is letting yourself be seen in one honest, uncurated way, which is braver and more nourishing than any amount of visibility.
